I came over to read the blog after Ross at NewsOverCoffee mentioned your site. Loved the pictures of the derby.
I may have an answer as to why someone would place an owl statue in a tree. My grandmother lived on N. Church street placed the same statue in a tree in her front yard. It was to scare away other birds from attacking her flower garden. Think of it as the animal kingdom's answer to a scarecrow.
I live in the house with the "Weird Motionless Owl". He was put there about 20 years ago to scare away bird. We had a terrible time with birds coming home to roost every night. The sidewalks were always filthy the noise woke the dead. Someone( probably the grandmother on Church street) suggested the owl. It worked for a short time but then the birds got wise. I guess they were wiser than a plastic owl. And so now "you know the rest of the story".

Thanks for the information. Even though the owl may not work anymore, please don't take it down. It is very cool.
